Leslie Hunsicker

Before becoming the CEO and principal interior designer at Leslie Hunsicker Interiors, I began my career learning the basics of floor coverings, wall coverings and custom draperies. With more than 35 years of experience, I have been in the business long enough to see trends come and go. This experience has allowed me to hone my skill as a creative designer, and — along with my multitalented tradespeople — a skilled general contractor.

Born in Wichita and raised in Topeka, I attended both Washburn University and Pittsburg State University, graduating from Pittsburg State University in 1987, with a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics/consumer sciences and a minor in art. After graduating, I moved back to Topeka to start my design career by working for retail design stores. Ten years of experience and many happy clients later, I opened Leslie Hunsicker Interiors in August 1997.

Starting in 1983, I regularly volunteered for the Designer Showhouse. This allowed me the chance to create and contract for the spaces I design for the public to tour. This special labor of love was the yearly fundraiser for Child Care Aware® of Kansas, which benefits children and families by providing information, educational resources and referrals of qualified care providers. My love for this charity deepened over the years, so I took on the design coordinator position, where I oversaw all designers and their creative endeavors relating to each of the Designer Showhouses.

I still live in Topeka, and have recently purchased my childhood home — a late mid-century modern wonder — in the Knollwood neighborhood. I have spent the last year updating it and bringing some of my most beloved memories back to life. This has given me the opportunity to experience the design process myself. Never one to live with the same design for too long, my home is always undergoing some sort of update! In my own words, “It keeps me from underappreciating the patience of my clients while I’m working my magic in THEIR homes!”
